Back in the 00’s I was a lone mom trying to make ends meet.
I was stretching every dollar to its maximum spending power.
I had fallen for someone that was not only manipulative, but who did not have the capacity to love and take care of his own daughter in the way that a father should.
While on the outside I had it all together, behind closed doors, my brokenness had me reaching for the sugar to try and fill the cracks in my broken heart.
My life was a soap-opera drama, we were statistics and I was distraught!
I had fallen in love with textiles as a young child watching my grandmother and aunts sewing. The fascination grew and by the time I was 17 I had won a runner-up prize in a national design competition.
I went on to develop my own line of directional, sustainable womenswear in NY.
But a huge betrayal by my business partner resulted in me abandoning my dreams and falling into a space of utter FAILURE, SHAME, GUILT.
I retreated to London and resorted to a well paid but dull job, a mortgage and my daughter in a private fee paying school.
I was outwardly successful, but drowning in sorrow and grief because I had abandoned my authentic creative self.
I gave up on my higher self which had manifested as a creative powerhouse.
Every morning I gathered myself to put on a mask and march through the day like a Warrior-Queen.
Every night I played the competent mummy role to perfection and later gained emotional comfort in the kitchen as I consumed the sugar laden carbs in an attempt to escape the trauma of living the wrong life.
The incongruity of my roles was exhausting. I was coping but I was deeply unhappy and continuing to try and stuff my pain away.
So there I was at the brink of ruining my physical and emotional wellness: depressed and growing bigger because I was on the wrong path and not following my heart.
My motivation was low and my self loathing high.
I felt a deep sense of shame and guilt. Shame for choosing a partner so unwisely and guilt for denying my beautiful daughter the experience of having two loving and dotting parents.
I punished myself and worked tiresly to overcompensate for the lack of one parent.
I left little time for self-care as I worked my 18 hour schedule. I even worked weekends and took my daughter to the office with me where she sat with her colouring book and pens.
I was also a founding Director and Marketing Director of a start-up restaurant group that went on to be quite influential in the London Caribbean food market.
But I was burning the candle at both ends in my role as a lone parent battling with the feelings of embarrassment, abandonment and fear.

The strong resolve I had cultivated when I committed to a healthy lifestyle had disappeared. In its place was someone who avoided her emotions and appeased her feelings by relying on fleeting moments of comfort and satisfaction supplied by food and a sugar-high.
Then there was my disastrous dating life. I felt broken-hearted and dejected. So I resolved to 'taking care of myself' and my daughter through lavish, wonderfully crafted meals - every night!

The problem was that a 7 year old could hardly eat as much as an adult and so I ended up eating double portions because “food was not to be wasted”.
I emotionally ate my way to a body that was alien to me. I had a sense of self-loathing.
I could not get out of bed.
My mind was on pause as I simply looked at the ceiling.
I had a complete physical, mental and emotional breakdown.
I was was signed off work for 6 months.
I slept for 18 hours each day.
I crawled out of bed only to take my daugher to school and collect her from the childminder 12 hours later.
This was my rock-bottom. I was just 37 but felt like an old lady of 80.
